H&R Block Fails to Block Social Security Number on Mailing

January 05, 2006

H&R Block sent out free copies of their TaxCut software to former clients, with their social security number printed on the mailing label. The recipient's 9 digit Social Security Number is embedded in a string of numbers printed on the shipping label. H&R Block became aware of this problem in late December and notified those affected by mail. H&R Block has posted information about the issue on their website at www.taxcut.com/answers.

The TaxCut software was mailed out by Third Class Mail, while the letter outlining the incident was sent out by First Class Mail. The incident has been widely publicized prior to all the TaxCut packages being delivered. With the name, address and social security number on the shipping label the risk for identity theft is higher. Since H&R Block mailed these CD's to the customers' last known addresses, there could be many that are unaccounted for.
