Rhode Island State Website Loses Credit Card Information

January 30, 2006

A security breach at Rhode Island’s internet site run by Olathe-based NIC Inc. resulted in over 4000 credit card numbers being taken. The customers’ credit card numbers had been taken from the site where they can purchase licenses, renew vehicle registrations and conduct other business with the state.

NIC Inc. discovered the breach in December, but didn’t realize the extent of the breach until it learned of references in a Russian website. NIC’s announcement said an isolated software error caused the security breach and was limited to the Rhode Island site. NIC said the credit cards affected by the security breach had been used at the site between Dec. 31, 2004, and March 8, 2005.

The company provides web portals for 17 other states including Kansas. Each state’s site maintains an independent technology structure and the error was not present in the other sites, the company said.
