3 computers were stolen from the
communications department at the University
of Delaware in December 2004. One of those computers stored the names and
social security numbers of 343 students. University officials did
not know about the loss of personal information until June 2005.
According to university officials, information on the computer was
protected by 2 passwords – one to log on to the computer and the
other to open the database. Officials believe the computers were
stolen for their value as hardware. Following incidents of
computer theft, anti-identity theft guidelines have been created.
The guidelines include requiring that information not be stored
locally and protecting personal data when working on a computer
outside the university.
